Age of boater

 

 

13-15 yrs, <10 hp, >12 ft

=>16 yrs Power Boat & PWC

10-17 yrs Power Boat

=>14 yrs PWC

18 yrs no restriction except PWC

<12  yrs, <1O hp

=>12 yrs, Power Boat

=>16 yrs, PWC

0-25 hp no restrictions

>25 hp 12 yrs power vessel

12-15 yrs PWC Restrictions

16 yrs PWC

Operator license requirement

 

 

All boaters in NJ must have a Boating Safety Certificate

NJ residents must have a NJ Boating Certificate and driver license endorsement for non-tidal waters. Non residents may have USCGA, USPS or other approved certificate

Boaters 10-17 and PWC operators must have a Boating Safety Certificate.

NYS, USCGA, USPS and other state certificates are acceptable

CT residents and boaters more than 60 days year must have a Ct Certificate.  Non-residents do not need a certificate.

All PWC operators must have a Ct Certificate of Personal Water Craft Operation from the CT DEP

To operates boats >25 hp all boaters must have a Boating Safety Certificate.  Pa residents must have a Pa certificate.  Non residents may use certificates approved by NASBLA

Education

Boating courses must be taught by NJ certified instructors including USCGA and USPS instructors

NYS offers a boating course taught by NYS licensed instructors.  USCGA & USPS courses are acceptable

The Ct/DEP at a variety of locations offers Ct courses.  USCGA and USPS offer courses.  PWC exams must be CT/DEP exams

Pa Fish & Boat Commission offers class room, internet and video courses

USCGA & USPS course are acceptable

Titling

Vessels > 12' must be titled NJ DMV titles vessels state.nj.us/mvc/

1987 and newer vessels =>14'

Ct is not a title state, the bill of sale will suffice

Pa Fish & Boat Commission titles boats. 1997 & newer. Inboards, Outboards =>14' and PWCs

Registration

DMV registers vessels

All powered and titled vessels

Residence and boater =>180 days.  Annual renewal

Power vessels must be registered with NY DMV by NY residents or boaters more than 90 days.  3 year renewal

All motorized and sail =>19.5'

Ct residents or boaters more then 60 days must register boat with the CT DMV.  2 year renewal

Residents and boaters must register all power vessels more than 60 days www.fish.state.pa.us.  2 year renewal

Documentation

 

 

 

 

All owners who own, rent, lease space in NJ except transient must register documented vessels.

Only registration stickers must be displayed

NY residents or boaters more than 90 days must register documented boats but only display the registration sticker

Ct residents or boaters more then 60 days must register documented boats but only display the Ct Certificate of Decal

Pa residents or boater more than 60 days must register documented boats but only display the registration decal
